October Coach’s Newsletter

Thanks so much for doing what you do! I truly appreciate it. Our community would not be as strong as it is without y’all. Keep crushing it! Going to try to start doing these on a regular basis. Let me know what you think.

What’s Happening At CFCF
  • The Fortitude Foundation Annual Dinner 10/19 @5:00pm – Would be great if y’all could attend this and push our community, your friends, family, coworkers, that one guy you met at King Soopers that one time, etc. to attend this. Our 2025 mission is to grow this to be a sustainable model that we can bring to other CrossFit gyms in the Denver metro area.
  • Halloween WOD, Pumpkin Carving, and Watching Sleepy Hollow at the gym – 10/25 @6pm. BYO Pumpkin, Snacks, Etc.
  • New Shirt/Hoodie Order Going Live This Next Week – These are pre-orders only. If folks don’t order them, they will miss out. Email with designs coming out between now and Monday.
Coaching Things
  1. October coaching challenges.
    1. Circle Cueing – Let’s continue to push our comfortability & work on circle cueing. Pick one common fault to look for at a time, have cues ready for that 1 common fault you’re looking for, walk the room, reset, cue, go, cue.
      1. I’ve been guilty of this before, but please work to not sit at the front of the room & demo the whole time or do the lazy give me 5 power cleans without any feedback/cueing while warming up the more complex movements.
    2. Athlete feedback: Give direct feedback before, during, after class, and even via text messages as needed. “Ryan, your shoulder strength & mobility is great. You crushed those push jerks today.” “Lonnie, awesome work on those RMU drills today. Keep it up a couple of times a week and work that (x,y,z) drill a couple times a week and you’ll be up there in no time!” “Shaun, I know you hate running. You were pushing hard on those runs today. Try to hit every running workout you see this month!”
  2. Coaching Feedback Sessions – Starting in October, I’m going to sit in on one of your classes using the sheet below and give you feedback and 1-2 things to work on afterward. This is in no way a performance review. This is to help us all grow as coaches. I’ll have y’all do these for me too.
    1. Feedback Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18NdN0pmnNsBNgpmbtk8T4t4I0NZZ9SMNtheLZkawLPo/edit?usp=sharing
  3. Coach’s Meeting: Friday, 10/18 @6:15pm.
    1. Mastering the whiteboard brief – Bring the energy, explain the workout & all levels, explain the intent of the WOD, give specific examples on how to scale appropriately (timing of rounds, x reps in a row of barbell movement, etc.), tell folks you know that have specific injuries or needs what they should be doing as well or let them know you’ll be checking & chatting with them during the warm-up, leave time for questions. Don’t talk about cues or do any movement breakdowns here. We’ll each have a turn to break down a workout and give a brief and give feedback.
    2. Coaching Practice: Handstand push-up. I’ll work through the full progression first, then y’all will have a chance.
    3. Personal Training: If time, we’ll chat about personal training as well. How to book, how to get folks interested in personal training, etc.
